I committed to over time keep raising awareness around accessible and inclusive urbanization in Nairobi through writing blogs and articles in newspapers and public campaign including sharing knowledge, guidelines and other resource materials. I have not engaged much on this, as I got disrupted during the pandemic and many things came up, but I wrote one blog piece.
Awareness raising is key and I hope that public education is one avenue that can be used to influence policy.
It is a continuous activity that I am able to do, as my line of work entails advocacy.
Communication and awareness raising/advocacy, remain one key aspect that will always remain relevant in the advocacy for the inclusion of persons with disabilities. It is also more innovative when the advocacy is driven by people with disabilities themselves, and in this case, from a disability that is often underrepresented, psychosocial disability, therefore being able to be in a platform of influence is critical.
Advocacy requires commitment and as well as creating networks to be able to amplify voices. It is something that I keep doing in my line of work, creating networks to be able to amplify voices of persons with disabilities.
The engagement of people with disabilities in all issues that concern them, and importantly the issue of urban development that should not further segregate people with disabilities because of inaccessibility must be focused on. Interventions to ensure accessibility, reasonable accommodation, and being central in all urban planning must put people with disabilities at the center.
