Project Description

The Fès controlled landfill has been operated by Ecomed since 2003 and receives approximately 1,000 tons of MSW per day. An LFG capture system and 1 MW gas engine were installed in 2015, representing one of Morocco’s earliest municipal WtE projects. The project faced regulatory constraints related to electricity offtake and grid access, limiting scale-up beyond initial capacity. Project status: Operational (LFG), with limited expansion to date Project scale: 1,000 t/day MSW; ~1 MW electrical capacity

Technical Feasibility

MSW Collection Systems

The site of the new Fes landfill is located 12 km from the city center on the Sidi Hrazem ring road, it has an area of about 110 ha. Ecomed, a subsidiary of US companies Edgeboro and GESI, has operated the landfill since 2003 for the city of Fes, the contract runs for 30 years.

MRF/MBT Integration

To be defined during feasibility

MSW Volumes

Fes receives on average 1000t of MSW per day. Preliminary waste composition TBA by the Ministry of Interior, and with the application of WaCT for detailed waste composition.
