What is the 2030 Agenda and what are the Sustainable Development Goals?

On September 25, 2015, world leaders adopted a set of global goals to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new agenda for sustainable development, the 2030 Agenda. Each goal has specific targets which must be achieved in the next 15 years.

To achieve these goals, everyone has to do their part: governments, the private sector, civil society and people like you.

What can you do to contribute to the SDGs?

There are very easy things that we can introduce into our routine to help realizing the SDGs and, if we all do it, we will achieve great changes. Find here " The Lazy Person’s Guide to Saving the World."

How does this Habitat-Participatory initiative accelerate the implementation of the SDGs?

In an increasingly urban world, local governments, due to their proximity to people, can involve citizens in the decision-making process and use citizen participation as a means to find innovative solutions to complex problems affecting cities.

The implementation of participatory budgets (PB) is a form of inclusive and democratic government which calls citizens to participate in the change necessary to improve urban environments. The implementation of participatory budgets is directly related to target 16.7: “Ensure adoption at all levels of inclusive, participatory and representative decisions that meet the needs” of SDG 16: “Promote societies, fair, peaceful and inclusive”.

In addition, there are other SDGs and targets related to the implementation of the participatory budgeting. You can find them bellow:

SDG 5’s targets related to the implementation of Participatory Budgeting:

5.5 Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision making in political, economic and public life

5.B Enhance the use of enabling technology, in particular information and communications technology, to promote the empowerment of women

5.C Adopt and strengthen sound policies and enforceable legislation for the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls at all levels

SDG 10’s targets related to the implementation of Participatory Budgeting:

10.2 By 2030, empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status

10.3 Ensure equal opportunity and reduce inequalities of outcome, including by eliminating discriminatory laws, policies and practices and promoting appropriate legislation, policies and action in this regard

SDG 11’s target related to the implementation of Participatory Budgeting:

11.3 By 2030, enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanization and capacity for participatory, integrated and sustainable human settlement planning and management in all countries

SDG 16’s targets related to the implementation of Participatory Budgeting:

16.6 Develop effective, accountable and transparent institutions at all levels

16.7 Ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making at all levels

16.B Promote and enforce non-discriminatory laws and policies for sustainable development
