The Land Portal Foundation

The Land Portal’s mission is creating the leading online resource for information, data, and knowledge-exchange on land governance issues. By working with partners, the Land Portal is building a better information ecosystem that will support all stakeholders to engage in more informed and inclusive land governance research, debate, advocacy and policymaking. The Land Portal allows for the collection, sourcing, and searching of otherwise fragmented and inaccessible data and information on land governance and land use from diverse sources, produced by governments, academia, international organizations, indigenous peoples and NGOs. In addition to documenting land rights, the Land Portal also encourages social information exchange, debate and networking. The Land Portal aims to improve knowledge, communication and dialogue around land rights and land governance worldwide, with a particular emphasis on those most at-risk due to insecure land rights and great vulnerability to landlessness. LandPortal.info powers the online hub through a core platform and supports partner projects in local regions and thematic areas while providing freely available data, knowledge, research and communication services, all based upon a flexible partnership model. The Land Portal is based upon four core services:
  • (Data) The Land Book provides country and thematic pages with standardized indicator data, data visualization tools, curated country/theme narratives, and access to relevant research and publications. The Land Book provides a one-stop shop for key statistics and resources on land governance in every country of the world. It is backed by an underlying linked open data platform, providing curated and quality assured data for third-parties to re-use.
  • (Information) The Land Library aggregates publications from more than 700 partner organizations and open access resources, providing the ability to search and browse research and reports from across the spectrum of land governance organizations. To populate the Land Library, the Land Portal works with partners to implement open access and open content policies and to create improved land-governance related metadata.
  • (Debate) The News and Land Debate sections of the Land Portal surface and share diverse voices on land governance issues. Through media partnerships with land governance events, and by hosting asynchronous online discussions, the Land Portal works to make sure all voices are heard on land governance issues.
  • (Community) Community pages provide a directory of organizations working on Land Governance, and hosted microsites for short-term projects offer a sustainable space for knowledge sharing.
