International Research Group on Law and Urban Space (IRGLUS)

The International Research Group on Law and Urban Space (IRGLUS) was formed in 1993 with the objective of gather professionals from diverse backgrounds and affiliations - academics, government officers, city planners, public administrators, NGO members, etc. - who are doing research on or with interest in the interface between law and urbanisation.

IRGLUS was in 1996 recognised as a Working Group of the Research Committee on Sociology of Law (RCSL) of the prestigious International Sociological Association (ISA).

IRGLUS membership has surpassed 130 and the working languages are English and Spanish.

IRGLUS' areas of interest are:

  • law and urban environmental planning, policy and management;
  • property rights, development rights and housing rights;
  • informal development, security of land tenure and regularisation experiences;
  • environmental rights;
  • legal protection of cultural and historical heritage;
  • intergovernmental relations, local government and metropolitan administration; and
  • social movements, gender relations, participatory mechanisms for democratic urban environmental management, etc.
