GLTN/UN-Habitat country level engagement in Uganda

GLTN/UN-Habitat has recently commenced piloting country level engagement in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).  In Uganda GLTN is supporting the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development (MLHUD) in the implementation of the National Land Policy (NLP) and the establishment of a development partners’ platform.  GLTN/UN-Habitat is also supporting the Uganda Land Alliance (ULA) to strengthen its capacity on gender in relation to land and ACTogether /Slum Dwellers International (SDI) to map and record informal settlements in 14 municipalities across the country.

A GLTN/UN-Habitat team visited Uganda in October 2014 to participate in the United Nations Development Action Framework (UNDAF) 2016-2020 retreat held in Entebbe and support the inclusion of land in the UNDAF as a key thematic area of focus.  The team also met with a number of key stakeholders in the land sector in Uganda including representatives from other UN agencies and the UN Resident Coordinator (RC) Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa-Onochie. The RC welcomed GLTN and pointed out that GLTN's work on land in Uganda is extremely timely in view of the recent release of Uganda’s NLP in February 2013 and growing pressures on land tenure associated with population growth and investment in the country’s oil and mining sector.  The RC is interested to see different UN agencies work together to develop a coherent land strategy and encouraged GLTN/UN-Habitat to work in close cooperation with other agencies to ensure the UN delivers as one to improve land governance in Uganda.
